International Conference

Regional Competitiveness Clusters and economic development

Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 March 2009
HEC Management School - Liège (Wallonia, Belgium)

Objectives

Competitiveness Clusters are networks uniting companies, research units and training centres to form one of today's backbones for regional economic development and innovation policies in Europe and the world.

As such great efforts have been realised, researchers and players in these policies are seeking answers to a number of questions:

  • How do these policies stimulate and support players in the economy, employment, training, education and research in the development of these new networks?
  • How do these networks contribute to regional economic development and to company competitiveness? Which best practices will mobilise the players, in particular SMEs, create sustainable value and innovation, structure business sectors, win markets, provide a network of competences and ensure good governance?
  • How does the development of these networks affect regional economies? How do we monitor and evaluate the efficiency of support systems and the implementation of these networks?

To allow the players to debate and reply to these questions, three research centres, the University of Liège HEC Management School's Research Unit in Strategy and Innovation, the University of Brussels Applied Economics Department's Centre of Regional Economy and Technology and FUCAM's "Economic, regional and public systems" centre are organising an international conference on regional competitiveness clusters and economic development. Speakers with an international reputation in the scientific, public and industrial worlds have been invited to take part.

The conference has taken the innovative approach of bringing together, in one international event, players from the academic, political and industrial worlds, in accordance with the philosophy of competitiveness clusters.

The conference is thus addressed to all the players involved in clustering policy: public decision-makers, researchers, company directors or managers, training centre managers, anyone who manages, designs or participates practically in a competitive cluster project.
